Description

Doidy Cup: The Original Training Cup for Independent Drinking

First designed in 1950 by a parent, the Doidy Cup was created to teach children how to drink properly and independently. Recommended by dentists and speech therapists, it is widely recognised by NHS trusts, charities, and councils as the ideal cup for children. Its free-flow functionality supports natural sipping motions, while the open cup and slanted design help children see the liquid level, improving hand-eye coordination and building confidence. Suitable for babies aged 3 months and older, the Doidy Cup supports the journey toward independent drinking. While its primary focus is on teaching proper drinking techniques, it also aids in transitioning from breastfeeding or bottle-feeding.

How to Use

  1. Wash the Doidy Cup before the first use.
  2. Pour a small amount of liquid into the cup. Gently place the rim on the baby’s lower lip to let them sip.
  3. As your child grows, encourage them to hold the cup handles and drink independently. Spills may occur but are part of the learning process.

Warnings and Precautions

  • Always supervise your child while feeding or drinking.
  • Check the temperature of liquids before serving.
  • Never leave a child unattended during feeding.
  • Discard at the first signs of damage or wear.

    Why it works

    Made for little mouths

    • Over 75 years

A dad's design, trusted by generations

In the 1950s, a draftsman set out to design a better first cup for his son. Over 75 years later, it's still made in the UK, to the same design.

    • One clever angle

      The slant that changes everything

The tilted rim brings the drink to your baby's lips without tipping the cup far back, so they can see what's coming. They learn how much to tilt, sip and stop, all by themselves. Two handles make it easy for small hands. No spout, no valve.

    • Trusted by experts

Recommended by dentists and speech therapists

Recommended by dentists, speech and language therapists and health visitors, and used in NHS speech and language therapy resources. Open-cup sipping helps babies practise the lip, tongue and jaw control they'll use for eating and talking.

      Trusted by health professionals

    • Learning to drink

      Open cup, from the start

The NHS suggests offering an open or free-flow cup from around 6 months. The Doidy Cup makes it doable from 3 months, with your help at first. Spills are part of learning, and the phase doesn't last long.

      From 3 months

    See it in action

    1. Wash before first use Give the cup a thorough wash before introducing it. The Doidy Cup is dishwasher-safe (top shelf) for ongoing cleaning.
    2. Start with a small amount Pour just a little liquid — breast milk, formula, or water — into the cup. Gently rest the rim on your baby's lower lip and let them sip at their own pace. You may need to guide it at first.
    3. Let them take the handles As your baby grows, encourage them to hold both handles and bring the cup to their mouth themselves. The slanted rim means they don't need to tip it far — trust the design.

    Handy little training cup

It is a handy little training cup for my 7 months old. The cup works for a soup and for other fluids. The baby girl can hold it easily. Of course, she would spill all liquid all over herself, hence I hold the bottom of the cup while she drinks. The cup handles are small enough for the little hands to grab. It is maybe a little bit too hard around the mouth area, but it is down to what it was made from.

    Great trainer cup

I love the cup, my child is earning how to drink out of a open cup and this is the perfect trainer cups. It's tilted so not hard to lift, has handles for extra support. Nice colour.

    LOVE THIS

Absolutely love this! Such a great cup, my 6 month old can use it. We were helping him to drink from a normal cup but the rim tended to hit his forehead/nose. This cup, because of the angel, doesn’t do that. It’s perfect!

    Good cup, clever design

We bought the munchkin leakproof 360 cup and tommee tippe cup but my daughter is 6 months and couldn’t drink from either.
We have to hold this cup for her but it’s a great first cup, we can see how much she drinks and I think it will help her get used to sipping.

    Stupid packaging

Cup is great. Minus one star for the infuriating packaging which claims to be fully recyclable but is in fact horrible thick plastic which is IMPOSSIBLE to open being sealed on every possible side and angle. Resorted to using a knife and cut myself opening it, could not be more irritated by this stupid and unnecessarily impenetrable design!

    Great training cup

We love this training cup. It’s easy to use and promote independent drinking. Yes, we needed to change clothes quite a few times while he was learning how to drink from it but my son really likes this cup and now he is drinking independently from it. I am very happy with this purchase becuse he loves to drink from it. Bonus point: he likes to drink water from it 😀

Good value for money, well designed.

It's easy to grab for a baby and minimises leaks.

My child does not want to use the bottle, and this cup is helping to replace my breast if needed. It can also beused during weaning, making it good value for money.

    Well designed cup

A really great cup for a 6 month old learning to drink from a cup. It doesn't need as much tilting for the water to come out as with a normal cup and it's very lightweight as well and feels nice to hold. The handles on the sides are also useful. I also wanted something that's not made of silicone like every other baby item is these days, so it ticked that box as well.

Great open cup for teaching baby

This has been such a helpful little cup, we also purchased the Bibado cups as the same time and whilst they are also good our little one likes to try and chew those (it’s the same material as his teethers so understandable). The Doidy is great all round. It’s much bigger which means I can see how much fluid my little one is tipping toward them, my little also really took to the handles on the side and the cup angle is really helpful as he hasn’t quite learnt to tip his head back yet but is still able to drink successfully. We started using this about 6.5 months and he’s able to drink from this supporting it himself now at 8.5 months.

    Questions about this product

From what age can my baby use the Doidy Cup?

The majority of babies begin open cup training at 6 months, but the Doidy Cup is so intuitive that even babies from 3 months can learn how to use it. At this stage, you'll be guiding it to their lips yourself — independent use comes gradually as they develop. Most babies are gripping the handles and sipping with some independence by around 6 months, but every child is different.

My baby keeps spilling — is that normal?

Completely normal, and actually a good sign. Spills mean your baby is practising the tilt, the sip, and the stop — all of which they need to learn. The Doidy Cup's slanted design minimises how far back it needs to be tipped, which reduces spills over time. Most children develop noticeably better control within just a few sessions.

Is the Doidy Cup dishwasher and microwave safe?

Yes to both. The cup is dishwasher-safe on the top shelf and microwave-safe for warming liquids. It's made from BPA-free, food-grade polypropylene and complies with BS EN 14350:2020 standards. Always check the temperature of any liquid before giving it to your baby.

Is the Doidy Cup suitable for children with additional needs?

The Doidy Cup is widely used in occupational therapy and speech and language therapy settings, including for children with additional needs.

Does the colour affect the cup in any way?

No — all Doidy Cups are identical in size, shape, material, and function. The colour is purely cosmetic. Available in 11 colours: Red, Orange, Yellow, Green, Turquoise, Blue, Grey, Pink, Cerise, Lilac, and Purple.
