The Bickiepegs Story

How one paediatrician's concern led to the invention of Bickiepegs.

Bickiepegs was founded in 1925 by Dr Harry Campbell, a paediatrician who was interested in how children’s jaws and teeth develop.

Dr Campbell noticed that many people in England had receding chins and crowded or crooked teeth. This often made chewing less effective and affected how the face looked. Curious about the cause, he carried out research and found a common pattern. Diets were changing. People were eating more soft, highly processed foods that required very little chewing. As a result, jaw muscles were not being used enough, which led to weaker jaw development.

Determined to find a solution, Dr Campbell focused on early childhood, when most jaw growth takes place. He understood that habits formed in the first few years of life can shape oral development later on. This led him to create Bickiepegs Teething Biscuits, designed for babies during the teething stage. The biscuits encourage chewing, helping to exercise jaw muscles and introduce firmer textures at an early age.

Today, Bickiepegs continues Dr Campbell’s work, focusing on early oral development and the importance of building healthy habits from the very start.

Our History

Discover how Bickiepegs progressed over the years.

1925

Driven by a concern for the nation’s oral health, Dr Harry Campbell founded Bickiepegs in 1925. He observed that softer diets were linked to poorer chewing habits, receding chins, and crowded teeth. Believing good oral habits should begin early, he advocated exposing babies to firmer textures to support healthy chewing from the start.

1927

Production of Bickiepegs began in Welwyn Garden City, where the biscuits were carefully hand-baked by skilled bakery workers.

1930s

Bickiepegs gained recognition from members of the British Royal Family, including Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother, and were used in the Royal Nurseries during this period.

1950s

Bickiepegs continue their original mission of supporting healthy oral habits from an early age, helping generations of children through teething and early feeding. Alongside this, the Doidy brand became known for its distinctive slanted cup, encouraging children to learn independent drinking in a more natural way.

1970s

Production of Bickiepegs relocated to Aberdeen, Scotland, and has continued to be created with the utmost care there ever since.

Present and Future

We continue our mission to support early oral care and baby development, while encouraging independence as children grow. Everything we create is made with care and thoughtfully designed with children’s wellbeing in mind.
