Bickiepegs – Award Winning Baby Brand

Bickiepegs Teething Biscuits

The world's first food-based teether, trusted since 1925.

The natural, healthy choice for proper teething.

Bickiepegs were first developed in 1925 by Dr. Harry Campbell MD FRCP, a leading Harley Street paediatrician renowned for his research on infant oral health. His work focused on mastication, jaw development, and teeth formation in children, and he observed a rise in dental diseases and underdeveloped jaws in the UK. This was largely due to the increased consumption of processed and soft foods during infancy, which limited essential jaw exercises.

Recognising the importance of chewing action for healthy oral and jaw development, Dr. Campbell established the Bickiepegs brand, developing the first-ever natural Bickiepegs Teething Biscuits, also known as Bickiepegs Wheat Teether or Teething Rusks.

Made from just wheat and water, with no added sugar or salt, these firm resistive teethers encourage natural biting and proper chewing, helping babies develop strong jaw muscles and healthy teeth while minimising ingredient ingestion and preserving their normal diet. Their food-based composition is not only safe and appealing to babies but also helps introduce harder textures, supporting the development of better future dietary habits.

Supports strong jaw and dental development.

The firm & hard texture of Bickiepegs Wheat Teether provides the ideal level of resistance for effective chewing exercises, supporting the development of strong jawbones and muscles—a crucial foundation for future feeding and speech.

Jaw development begins from birth, with over 50% of growth completed by age 4. As modern diets become increasingly soft and processed, jaw muscles are exercised less, leading to weaker development and poorer orthodontic outcomes. Research has shown a strong link between soft diets and misaligned teeth, highlighting the importance of introducing harder textures early on. Proper jaw development is highly associated with:

  • Stronger, well-developed and more stout jawbones
  • Roomier jaws that accommodate teeth properly, reducing crowding and leading to better orthodontic outcomes
  • Reduced risk of malocclusion and teeth misalignment

Early chewing practise for better feeding habits.

Chewing is a fundamental skill that plays a key role in a baby’s transition to solid foods. Early exposure to chewing motions helps babies develop the coordination needed to manage different textures, making mealtimes easier as they grow. Bickiepegs Wheat Teether provides a safe and effective way to practise controlled biting and chewing, allowing babies to strengthen their oral coordination while preparing for more complex feeding experiences. Babies who are familiar with chewing movements are often more confident eaters, reducing feeding difficulties when introducing solid foods.

Incorporating harder textures early on is essential for shaping future eating habits. When babies are only exposed to soft foods, they may struggle to accept firmer textures later, which can lead to selective eating and feeding aversions. Bickiepegs introduces babies to a resistive, food-based texture that mimics real food, helping them adjust to the sensation of chewing more effectively. This early experience makes it easier for babies to progress to a wider variety of foods, fostering a well-rounded diet and reducing texture-related feeding issues.

Soothes teething discomfort - no more tears.

Teething can cause discomfort, irritability, and a natural urge to chew. Like silicone and plastic teethers, Bickiepegs Wheat Teether is firm and designed to be chewed on for an extended period, helping to relieve teething discomfort by applying gentle pressure to sore gums. The hard texture provides the counterpressure babies instinctively seek, which can help soothe discomfort and promote gum stimulation. Research has also shown that edible teethers may be more effective in calming babies, as they offer a familiar and engaging chewing experience, making teething phases more manageable.

Safety ribbons/strings
Why do you only supply 2 ribbons?

For health and safety reasons, we only provide two ribbons per packet. There have been instances where parents tied the ribbons together to hang the teether around the child, which can pose a safety hazard. Limiting the number of ribbons helps prevent such risks.

Our research also shows that not all parents use the ribbons. To support sustainability, the ribbons are washable and reusable, reducing waste whilst still offering a convenient option for those who choose to use them.

Whilst we do not recommend ingestion of the ribbon, our safety ribbons are made from 100% food-safe, unbleached cotton, designed to be unharmful to the child.

However, if your child shows any discomfort after swallowing the ribbon, always contact your paediatrician or professional helplines for guidance and support.

We are happy to send ribbons for free should you need more of them. Please fill out our contact form for the request.

Can I use the biscuits for my baby who doesn't have teeth yet?

Yes, you can. Whilst babies may not have teeth yet, they still need to practise chewing skills. Around 6 months, babies’ gums start to harden and are usually ready for chewing actions. However please be more gentle with the exercises as their gums may still be soft.

Yes, you can. We would still recommend chewing on harder items from time to time to support jaw development, although your child may have all of their first teeth.

We only use wheat flour, wheat germ and water in the biscuits, with no added sugar, salt, additives, colourings or flavourings. We do not add any animal products to the biscuits.

A rash may be an indication of an allergic reaction. As the biscuits are made from wheat this contains the allergen cereals containing gluten. Please check with your doctor whether your child may be allergic to gluten. Do not use the product if your child may be allergic.

Why are teething biscuits not meant to be consumed?

For babies aged 6 months to 3 years, nutrition intake needs to be carefully managed to support their growth and development. If teething biscuits (or other tasty snacks) were consumed as food, they could reduce a baby’s appetite for their main meals, potentially leading to an imbalance in essential nutrients. Teething biscuits are designed to provide a safe, firm surface for babies to chew on, encouraging jaw development and soothing teething discomfort, rather than serving as a food source.

Whilst the biscuit may have a subtle taste of wheat, they are bland because we do not add any sugars, salts, or flavorings to the biscuits, as this is essential for minimising flavour exposure for your child. For your baby’s well-being, this decision ensures they are not introduced to strong tastes during early development. To help your baby engage with the chewing exercises, we encourage you to be patient, interact with them, and consistently guide them to chew on the biscuit.

Early exposure to strong flavors, sugars, and salts can influence your baby’s taste preferences and dietary habits. Research has linked early consumption of sugars and salts to a higher likelihood of developing preferences for these flavors later in life, which may contribute to unhealthy eating patterns. By avoiding these additives, we aim to support your baby’s healthy development and natural palate formation.

Thank you for your suggestion. We believe that flavour exposure should be kept minimal for infants to avoid influencing their taste preferences and dietary habits in the future. Our teething biscuits are designed to support oral development rather than serve as a snack. Introducing strong flavours at this stage may reduce a baby’s interest in their main meals, which provide the essential nutrients needed for healthy growth and development. To help maintain a balanced diet, we currently do not offer ‘better tasting’ versions.

Bickiepegs biscuits are designed to be resistive, meaning they do not easily dissolve or wear away. This feature minimises the consumption of the biscuit, ensuring that your baby’s diet, which often follows strict nutritional guidelines, remains unaffected. It also provides the optimal surface for chewing for an extended period of time.

We consider our teething biscuits a food-based teether that addresses physical developmental needs in babies,  instead of a snack. We are not designed to be consumed but it is safe to do so.

The biscuits are intentionally made hard to provide the optimal surface for effective chewing exercises. Soft or dissolvable surfaces do not sufficiently engage orofacial muscles or stimulate the jaw as much, which is why a harder texture is essential for promoting healthy development.

When used correctly, the biscuits should not hurt your baby’s gums. Ensure that your child bites on the biscuit in the premolar area and avoid forcing the biscuit onto their gums, as this could cause discomfort.

The biscuits are finger-shaped and, at first glance, may appear small. However, we have carefully designed their size to be optimal—small enough to fit comfortably into your baby’s mouth while remaining large enough to avoid slipping down their throat.

To ensure your baby’s safety, adult supervision is required at all times during use. We also recommend using the ribbon provided with each biscuit. Thread the ribbon through the hole in the biscuit and secure it to your baby’s clothing or wrist. This adds an extra layer of safety while your baby enjoys the benefits of Bickiepegs.

When should I give this to my baby?

Usually by 6 months, babies start the teething period where their first teeth emerge from the gums. It’s easier to exercise the jaw muscles when babies have teeth, and the time when teething occurs may vary between babies.

You can still use the biscuits even if baby has no teeth yet, as  by 6 months their gums harden in preparation for teething and they still need to practise chewing skills.

Try giving the biscuits before meal time to gauge your baby’s interest.

Using Bickiepegs Wheat Teethers before meal times can be particularly beneficial as they are made from food and may appeal more to your baby when they are slightly hungry. Hunger can encourage your baby to chew on the teether for longer, making the chewing exercises more effective and promoting enhanced jaw development.

In addition, engaging in chewing exercises before meals may help stimulate your baby’s appetite, potentially improving their readiness and enthusiasm for their main meals.

For hygienic reasons and safety reasons, please do not use each peg for more than 20 minutes.

While the biscuits may appear perfectly fine, extended use can increase the risk of weaknesses developing within the biscuit and lead to the buildup of bacteria from saliva on the biscuit over time. To ensure your baby’s safety, it’s best to discard the biscuit after this period.

Dipping in liquid or sweetener will soften the biscuit and decrease the effectiveness of chewing exercises. It may also lead to potential weaknesses within the biscuit.

After opening, the biscuits should be stored in an airtight container where possible.

Depending on the storage environment (temperature, humidity, location) this may affect the biscuit’s internal structure. Always check the biscuits by bending and pulling in all directions before use.

I absolutely adore bickiepegs and even my mother gave them to me as a child. They are great for my 10 month old baby as she has 8 teeth and 3 coming through;a lot for her age. The only thing I would say is that I love the concept of the string as it prevents her from chucking it and it falling on floor etc. However, i cannot get the string though the hole and I don’t have anything to try to pull it through. The gaps seems to be too small for the strings without the use of say something like a needle. Maybe it would be better if the holes were round or bigger? Nonetheless I continue to buy lots.

I just want to say, from the bottom of my heart, bickiepegs have been amazing for my 6 month old. I just started using one for her last night and she cannot get enough of them for relief for her teeth! She was just screaming in pain and I gave her a Bickiepeg and it’s like instant relief for her. I also love the fact they are sort of food shaped and smell like biscuits as I’m having a horrible time trying to introduce solids, she just won’t take things to her mouth so I think these are going to help hugely. My daughters first tooth is now poking out and the second one a little point is showing so will soon follow and bickiepegs have been amazing. Do you do any other products at all? Would love to try them all!

Great organic teethers for babies. Little boy loved it. It's a food-based teether for babies to chew on. They're NOT meant to be consumed. Apparently they also don't add extra salt or sugar to ensure it's tasteless, so it doesn't interfere with the normal baby diet.
